Adirondack Is Back - The Hot New (Old) Fad In Outdoor Furniture!
It's not a big surprise that an American classic like the Adirondack Chair is making a huge come back in only the last two years. This trend is spreading quickly because folks all around America are choosing to spend a great deal more time kicking back and relaxing in their carefully crafted outside living space. I myself remember as a six year old, sliding into one of these great old chairs, with my feet swinging over the edge, while my grandpa and I peeled apples and mused about the hot apple pie piled high with ice cream that we knew my granny would have waiting for us after we had supper. On the wide arm rest of the chair, I balanced a lemonade, the breeze was warm and peaceful. His stories made time fly. It's truly no mystery why we love to unwind outside, whether that's on the deck, in your garden area, out on the patio, or on the porch. What better way to do that than to slide into a wonderful, deep seated, high backed Adirondack chair and just leave your cares behind.
You'll be satisfied and shocked to find a great assortment of Adirondack furniture out there now. The original design has not only stood the test of time, but the whole Adirondack trend has exploded with a great array of colors, styles, finishes, and material. Traditional Adirondack style furniture is constructed from wood that is known for resisting corrosion and insects such as cherry, cypress, white or red cedar, or oak. The wood selected is going to vary depending on the part of the country as do specific furniture styles. A popular option in traditional Adirondack style is garden furnishings built out of polymer "lumber" that's made out of recycled plastic packaging, milk jugs, and other things. This is not only an environmentally friendly way to buy furniture, but you'll also have advantages with easy care, durability, longevity, and your colors won't pale because the pigments are mixed all the way through the plastic with UV inhibitors for added protection.
Where exactly did this little piece of Americana come from? Actually, it comes from the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. This furniture design was commonplace among the many mountain getaways and vacation resorts that were trendy back then. By the time 1940 came around you could see Adirondack furniture almost every place. The design started to move south and was heading west quickly. As the Adirondack design grew in popularity, and made its way around the country, influences regionally started to show up. The design was applied to many styles of outdoor furniture including; rocking chairs, gliders, benches, porch swings, and thanks to our Canadian neighbors, a piece they called the "tete a tete" which translates literally to; "head to head". This romantic little design combines a couple of chairs and a table between them and is constructed as one piece. What an amazing way to spend a cozy Saturday with someone you love!
