A Pocket Watch for Sophistication
Unlike wristwatches, pocket watches are meant to be placed on coat or trousers pockets. They come with a chain that attaches it to a belt loop or waistcoat. Pocket watches are analog watches in contrast to the many modern digital displays.
Pocket watches that are secured by chains are usually decorated on those chains with ornaments. These chains together with their ornaments are commonly referred to as fobs. Most pocket watches are equipped with a hinged cover that is flipped open when checking the time. This is to protect the face of the watch and the workings of the pocket watch. They commonly have fasteners that goes through a buttonhole to attach them well. This reminds us of train conductors.
Pocket watches preceded wristwatches by centuries. The earliest mention of a pnew pocket watches was in 1462. It was on a letter made by an Italian clock maker named Bartholomew Manfredi for the Marchese di Manta offering the latter a pocket clock. In the letter, Manfredi assured the Marchese of a pocket clock that was way better than the one owned by the Duke of Modena.
Pocket watches, which were then called pocket clocks, appeared as spring-driven models in Italy by the end of the 1400s. Peter Heinlein, a German locksmith from Nuremberg started manufacturing pocket watches in 1510. That soon became very popular all over Europe.
Pocket watches come in two varieties. There is the open-faced that may be of the wind-up variety called a winding pocket watches. The other is the covered version, with a hinged front cover protecting its crystal and face. Since the pocket watchs separate second dial is usually located at six oclock, the pendant (also known as the stem of the open face pocket watch) is positioned at twelve oclock. For the covered ones, there is another stem, called the hunter stem, and is located at three oclock. To read the open face pocket watches then, the watch is turned ninety degrees so that the stem points to the right.
Whether it is open-faced or hunter-type, modern pocket watches uses the quartz movement feature.
Pocket watches are clearly not as common as the wristwatches, but they are often preferred for their functionality and elegance. Pocket watches can be customized with designs and engravings on the watch cover or trinkets on pocket watch accessories. These can also be made excellent gifts by customizing them with designs you have in mind.
There are a lot of options in todays pocket watches, from the standard to chronographs, ladies pendants, and Swiss Army Pocket watches. Any of them can make a great gift.
